Description
Christine Balling (Yvonne Furneaux) runs a successful champagne business and has been trying to convince Paul Wagner (Maurice Ronet) - copyright holder to the company - to sell up to an American operation, in what would be a lucrative deal. Her husband Chris (Anthony Perkins), a friend of Wagner's, is brought in to convince Paul of the sale. While on a trip to Hamburg, Paul picks up a German girl who turns up dead the next morning. Paul can't remember if it was he who killed her. Chris, who becomes aware of the incident, promptly tells his wife, and she tries to blackmail Wagner into signing a deal with Americans. When another woman turns up dead, with Paul once again the last person to see her alive, he begins to question his own sanity.
A stylistic tour de force by the French master of mystery, Claude Chabrol (This Man Must Die, Les Biches).
