Description
Surrealist Luis Buñuel's Diary of a Chambermaid is a withering critique of the rise of 1930s fascism, based on Octave Mirbeau's 1900 novel of the same name. It satirically depicts a society revelling in the perversity of it's political, social and sexual conventions.
When Celestine (Jeanne Moreau, Jules and Jim) begins work as a chambermaid in a crumbling Normandy estate, she is privy to the most personal of details about each of the members of the household: M. Monteill's craving for sex, Mm. Monteil's embittered repression, father-in-law M. Rabour's refined fetishism... but when two unexpected and shocking events take place in the quiet country community, Celestine suspects that the staunchly right-wing farm labourer, Joseph, is involved, and does everything in her power to make him confess.
