Handsome and debonaire playboy, Domenico Soriano (Marcello Mastroianni) first encounters 17 year-old prostitute Filumena Marturano (Sophia Loren) in a Neapolitan brothel during WWII. It is a meeting of souls destined to last and when the war concludes the two become lovers on and off for 22 years.
