Sergeant Flaxman (Chips Rafferty, Forty Thousand Horsemen) keeps a close eye on the rapscallion and takes note of his good deeds by marking 'nicks' on a tree outside of his father's (Reg Lye) blacksmith shop in an attempt to remind him of his objective - to earn a brand new .22 rifle of his own.
