Brendan O'Malley (Kirk Douglas), a former gunslinger, arrives at the Mexican home of his old flame, Belle Breckenridge (Dorothy Malone, Written on the Wind) to find her married to a drunkard (Joseph Cotten, The Third Man) preparing for a cattle drive to Texas. Hot on O'Malley's heels is Dana Stribling (Rock Hudson), a vengeful sheriff, who for personal reasons wishes to return O'Malley back to his jurisdiction. Both men join Breckenridge and his wife on the drive. When Stribling starts to court Belle, and her teenage daughter shows an interest in O'Malley, tensions mount before Texas is even in sight.
Made by Maverick director Robert Aldrich (The Dirty Dozen, Ulzana's Raid), The Last Sunset is one of the last classic Westerns, heralding the dawn of a more violent breed of Western helmed by the likes of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah.
